19/04/17 MASKS IN THE MAKING
Are you wanting your kids to understand why masks are made, where they are still used and why they initially came about? Then this clinic is for them. Send your kids in clothes they are willing to get dirty as they will begin with some art theory on masks and mask making that they will love, then we will head into sculpting our own mask out of a quick drying medium.
After a short morning tea break, we will continue on with our project of mask making by painting our artwork, the concentrate on the decorative aspects of it.
Your children will love this class, as it is mostly hands on whilst learning in the process. Please send morning tea, water and clothes that are ok to get dirty in with your kids.
Time: 9.00am till 12.30pm.
20/04/17 MOSAICS LIKE THE MASTERS
Mosaics began in Ancient Rome and have continued in many different countries and forms ever since. Using tiles, patterning plates and glosses your kids will plan out their own mosaic piece and build it. This activity is fantastic work for building hand muscles and thinking out of the box. Your child will have a finished mosaic piece to take home with them on the day. It is an activity that your children will be excited by and now that they do not get to do very often.
Your children will love this class, as it is mostly hands on whilst learning in the process. Please send your children with morning tea and water, and dressed in clothes that are suitable for art work.
Time: 9.00am till 12.30pm.
21/04/17 CANVAS AND COLLAGE CREATION
In this session students will begin by paining and patterning a quality canvas. We will then move on to use foam core boards and felt to create a decorative collage artwork which they will love. Felt is then decorated using pinpoint painting techniques and decoupage effects. Your children will walk away with a beautiful finished product as well as having used many new techniques to grow their interest and knowledge of art.
It is a fun but full on class that children love. Please send your children with morning tea and water, and dressed in clothes that are suitable for art work.
Time: 9.00am till 12.30pm.

What is art therapy?
In the Picture Art Therapy, Sydney is an art and behavioural therapy intervention business. What does this mean? Art therapy is a form of therapy which is non invasive and which uses basic art techniques to allow your unconscious thoughts and feelings to be uncovered. Art therapy is unlike usual therapies as it works on your underlying feelings and desires. These are realised through the use of forms of art and then discussion of your artworks and the work process within the art therapy session.
“Art therapy is the therapeutic use of art making, within a professional relationship, by people who experience illness, trauma or challenges in living, and by people who seek personal development. Through creating art and reflecting on the art products and processes, people can increase awareness of self and others cope with symptoms, stress and traumatic experiences; enhance cognitive abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.”
What do you do in art therapy sessions
Your art therapy session aims are developed through one on one discussion with your art therapist. It is then that a mixture of different art and behavioural intervention techniques are utilised to realise your aim/s.
Art therapy may use the following processes:
- Drawing using pencils, crayons and other mediums
- Clay work
- Discussion of photographs
In the Picture Art Therapy uses both art therapy and behaviour altering exercises to change the behaviours that are stopping someone from living their life to the fullest, and causing them issues in carrying out whatever it is that they want to achieve in their everyday life.
Cognitive behavioural therapy can also be used in addition to art therapy to make these changes happen, and to make sure you don’t go back to them when you’re in difficulty again. How do we do that? We teach you new behaviours to use instead of the old things you were doing which weren’t helping you solve your problem. We try to replace bad behaviours with good behaviours that work for you.
Why do art therapy?
Art therapy is successful as it is a therapy that uses art for self exploration and communication.
In fact, at In The Picture, we believe that through the use of art and behavioural therapies, we give words a voice. Art therapy allows your mind and thoughts to speak and be discussed without judgement. Through the use of art therapy the client finds a solution to their problems that they themselves are comfortable with. We as art therapists enable our clients to move forward with these solutions with the aim of helping clients be in control of and/or solve their problems.
Who is art therapy suitable for?
Art therapy is suitable and helpful for anyone who feels they have personal issues they need to address. Art therapy is suitable for children, teenagers and adults alike. In particular, art therapy provides great help to people experiencing any of the following:
- behavioural difficulties
- Social issues
- Bullying problems
- Sleep disorders
- Life changes/ need for life direction
- relationship issues e.g. Divorce/separation
- Domestic violence issues
- Grief and loss
- Trauma issues
- Eating disorders/self image issues
Do I need to be an artist?
To do art therapy you definitely don’t have to be good at art. Art therapy uses art techniques and as a client, you are guided in doing these by your art therapist. The aim of these sessions is never to judge your artwork, but instead to allow your unconscious to speak. In being involved in art therapy, you are not producing artworks with the intention of display for viewing, but instead art therapy artworks are used solely as discussion points between the client and therapist.
